New Technology at HVCH Will Allow Better Insurance Verification During Patient Registration
Hocking Valley Community Hospital has partnered with an insurance verification, software solution to collect more accurate insurance information at the time of registration. “This system, which will be up and running the first week of April, will allow us to verify, at the time of admission, one’s insurance coverage and benefits,” stated Julie Grow, Director of Patient Registration. HVCH will have real time access to Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial health plan insurance data to confirm patients’ eligibility at the point of service to determine financial responsibility. At this time, the hospital will also begin asking self pay patients to provide a photo identification and for a deposit to put toward paying for their care. The software will also provide HVCH with yet another method of providing the safest possible care by protecting our patients’ health insurance identification information. While we understand requesting payment up front is a change from what our patients are used to, HVCH is following suit with hospitals nationwide, as well as in Southeastern Ohio in an industry wide effort to reduce healthcare costs. HVCH will accept cash, check, or credit and debit cards for payment. The hospital also offers payment plan arrangements that can be made through the hospital’s financial counselors. “We are excited to have real time benefit information for our patients and their families for peace of mind while dealing with health issues. Surprises and misinformation are challenging to families when dealing with the difficult details of their health plans. This system also allows for the hospital to assist in financial planning with no surprises and help the patients feel empowered to make informed decisions,” shared Grow.

Annual Employee Children’s Christmas Party

Adrienne Nihiser, RN, Family Birth Center, helps her children, Ava and Ella, decorate their gingerbread men cookies.
Hocking Valley Community Hospital recently held the annual Employee Children’s Christmas party in the hospital’s front lobby. The party is hosted for the children and grandchildren of the hospital’s 380 employees.
Eli Markin, son of Chris and Amy Markin, both HVCH employees, sleeps soundly through his Santa visit.
The event is coordinated by the hospital’s Employee Satisfaction Committee, and it is financed by the hospital with generous donations from the Medical Staff and individual physicians. The event is very exciting and takes a lot of planning and coordination. Committee members work with the children’s parents and grandparents to help Santa get that one special gift for each child. The committee members also help Santa by individually wrapping each gift.
On the evening of the party, the whole family is greeted and served refreshments of cookies and punch by the hospital’s Senior Leadership Team. Over 200 children attended, and each child has their personal visit with Santa and has the opportunity to sit on Santa’s lap share their Christmas wish list.
This year the children also had the opportunity to decorate their own homemade gingerbread man cookie. The cookies were made by Sharon Conner, Supervisor of the Nutrition and Food Service Department. “It was such fun to see the children decorate their cookies, some children were quite meticulous while others just piled on the gumdrops and other decorations,” shared Conner.
Ginger Johnson, Credentialing Secretary at HVCH and talented local photographer, took photos of the children as they visited with Santa. Johnson then provided each family with their Santa memento. Family photos were also taken and were provided to each family group.
A few members of the Logan High School National Honor Society volunteered their time and played a key part of the evening by greeting and registering the children, providing them with name badges, helping the children decorate the gingerbread men cookies, and then distributing a bag of holiday treats to each child as they departed.
“This evening is a very special time for our hospital family. We love the opportunity to see the children and grandchildren of our employees. It is a joy to see each child open their present from Santa,” shared LeeAnn Lucas-Helber, Hocking Valley Community Hospital CEO. “I am very grateful for our Employee Satisfaction Team, who for the past three years has organized such an outstanding event. The Team does a tremendous amount of planning, and they give up a lot of their personal time to make this evening such an exciting and special time for the children,” added Lucas-Helber.

Hocking Valley Community Hospital has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in CT scan quality and safety as the result of a recent survey by the American college of Radiology (ACR).
“Mary Conkey, RT(R) (CT), and Robert Sigler, RT(R) (CT), were instrumental in helping HVCH achieve this distinction. Mary and Robert were tasked to submit a multitude of films for evaluation. The submitted scans were so impressive that the Committee asked if they could use several of the films for teaching purposes,” shared LeeAnn Lucas-Helber, President of HVCH.
“The ACR requirements are rigorous but being accredited provides a high level of confidence to our patients and physicians that only the highest quality of care is being provided by Hocking Valley Community Hospital.” according to Brian Sampson, Director of Radiology. “Our Mammography and the Open MRI are also accredited through ACR.” added Sampson.
The ACR, headquartered in Reston, VA., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Hospitalists Will Care for Patients at Hocking Valley Community Hospital

Hospitalists, Dr. John Ireton and Dr. Brian Still, meet with local Family Practice physicians, Dr. Jim Hayward and Dr. Loretta Scism to discuss the new hospitlist program at HVCH.
LeeAnn Lucas-Helber, HVCH CEO/President, announced that beginning this month, Hocking Valley Community Hospital introduced a hospitalist program to the community, offering patients better physician access while being hospitalized and giving primary care physicians more options to care for patients in their offices and in the hospital. “We have a wonderful team of experienced family practice physicians who work well together and have shared their ideas of bringing a hospitalist program to our hospital,” stated Helber.
Hospitalists are physicians whose primary focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. By focusing their practice in the care of hospitalized patients, a Hospitalist can address the unique aspects of a patient’s needs during the hospital stay. A Hospitalist typically spends most of their workday in the hospital and thus, can be more readily available to a patient. Hospitalists are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide patient care.
Hocking Valley Medical Group has hired two Hospitalists, Dr. John Ireton, Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Dr. Brian Still, Board Certified in Family Medicine, to provide care for patients admitted to Hocking Valley Community Hospital. Both Ireton and Still come with several years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient care. Dr Ireton has been in private practice for 4 years in Logan, and worked 9 months for the Veterans Heath Association. Dr. Still has 17 years of family practice experience in Logan. Both physicians have held key positions of leadership within the HVCH Medical Staff and have actively worked with all the local physicians.
Instead of making rounds to see their patients at the hospital before or after their regular office hours, primary care physicians will now have an additional resource for providing continuity of care for their inpatients. This option will allow the physician more time to concentrate on patients at their office.
“Having a hospitalist program is one way we can enhance quality care and patient safety. Hospitalists facilitate effective patient management through communication with the patient’s primary care physician. By coordinating services provided in various departments of the hospital, we ultimately minimize the potential for medical errors and decrease the length of hospital stays,” shared LeeAnn Lucas-Helber HVCH President.
When patients are admitted to the hospital, their primary care physician will contact the hospitalist to inform him/her of their patient’s illness and to provide as much information as possible about the patient’s condition. The process is similar to what happens when a physician refers a patient to a specialist for an opinion or for additional tests or treatment.
While a patient is hospitalized, the hospitalist and primary care physician may talk further about a patient’s treatment. When the patient is discharged from the hospital, the hospitalist will inform the patient’s regular physician of any further treatment needs, assist in arranging follow-up and prescribe necessary medications. The hospitalist also will send the patient’s discharge summary to his/her primary care physician.
One of the many advantages of hospitalists is that they can check on patients frequently throughout the day, if needed. Often patients’ stays are shorter because hospitalists are available to discharge patients at any time, and the patient does not have to wait for their primary care physician to leave their office and come to the hospital to facilitate a discharge.
Dr. Jim Hayward, Family Practice Physician shared, “I have a very active family practice and working with the hospitalists will allow me to concentrate on my outpatients, while staying constantly informed on my patients that are admitted to Hocking Valley Community Hospital. It will be a great collaborative effort between the local family practice physicians and the hospitalists with all of us uniting to provide better quality care to our patients.”

Recently, the Hocking Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary made a generous donation to Hocking Valley Community Hospital’s Outpatient Rehab Department to purchase an electrical stimulation and ultrasound unit. The Stimulation unit is used for: Muscle relaxation, preventing muscle atrophy, increasing blood circulation to the injured muscle, relieving inflammation, and providing relief from pain, both chronic and acute.
“Our patients are extremely pleased with the Electrical Stimulation and Ultrasound Unit. We already had one unit, but our patient volume had increased and a second unit was needed. We feel so fortunate that the Auxiliary agreed to purchase the new unit.” stated Cart Switzer, Outpatient Therapy Supervisor.
Each year the TWIG members volunteer thousands of hours toward many worthwhile projects, and the end result is a significant contribution which helps provide state of the art technology and quality healthcare services to the area residents. Some of the fundraising projects include bake sales, Chinese auctions, book sales, uniform sales, and jewelry sales.
“In the past the Auxiliary has purchased exercise equipment for the Cardiovascular Department, MedCarts, beds, surgery and anesthesia equipment, and wheelchairs. We are most grateful for all the Auxiliary members’ efforts in raising funds to purchase needed equipment. They are a dedicated group of women and we are grateful for their generosity to our hospital. They make a difference in the lives of our patients’ everyday,” shared Kathy Krumlauf, Director, Community Relations.

HVCH Foundation Donates Funds for PACS Unit
The Hocking Valley Community Hospital Foundation has pledged $300,000 for a new system that enhances patient care and streamline operations in the Radiology Department.
Synapse is a state- of- the- art radiology image and information network system that has dramatically streamlined hospital operations and enhanced patient care. Synapse is a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS), that permits the ability to electronically view, transmit and store diagnostic images, such as those generated by MRI, CT, ultrasound and x-ray.
Once a diagnostic image has been “captured”, the PACS technology enables radiologists to immediately and securely call up that image on any networked PC and make a diagnosis within seconds. thus eliminating the lengthy wait time previously necessitated by film development and the need to hand-carry images through the hospital for delivery to the radiologist’s office. This efficiency is a benefit to patients who now experience shorter waiting times, receive a quicker diagnosis, and are on a faster path to necessary treatment. Physicians can all view these images through the hospital’s computers, and even view the image from their offices and homes. This technology provides a more efficient and timely method for physicians to continually receive updates on a patient’s health problems through digital imaging.
“We are honored to have the opportunity to assist the hospital as they make major improvements in technology for better patient care. We thank our donors for their gifts because their support and contributions makes this $300,000 pledge possible,” stated Joe Murtha, Foundation President.
The HVCH Foundation members give freely of their time and talent to assist in funding new equipment and expand services to improve the lives of countless people in our community.

LeeAnn Lucas-Helber, HVCH Interim President, accepts the 2007 July Fire Starter Award from Quint Studer, CEO, Studer Group
L-R Stacey Gabriel, Director Emergency Department; Dave Crawford- Director Rehabilitation Services; Charlotte Blair- Executive Assistant; Missy Poling- Director Social Services; Dan Collard-Studer Group Head Coach, Julie Stuck,-VP Patient Services; LeeAnn Lucas Helber, Bob Schmidt- Director Human Resources; Quint Studer, Dr. John Ireton- Medical Director; Chase Wartenbe-Director Materials Management and Housekeeping; Vivian Vanbibber- Nursing Supervisor; Denise Kiamy- Director Nutrition and Food Services; Alycia Vollmar- Director Family Birth Center; Kathy Krumlauf-Director Foundation and Community Relations; and Judy Smith- Director Patient Accounts.
Fire Starter Award
Our journey began in early 2004 when, as a senior leadership team, we made a commitment to each other, our employees and physicians that we were ready to take our organization to the next level.
We used the Studer Group’s Nine Principles as our roadmap and the "Must Have’s" as our toolbox to move our organization’s performance forward. We engaged our leadership team through regular Leadership Development Institutes, focusing on the skills, tools and knowledge they needed to be better leaders. Our employee turnover was an indicator that we needed to improve our retention skills. Our patient satisfaction was inconsistent from month to month, so we focused on creating a much more consistent experience for all who came to HVCH seeking healthcare. Our finances were weaker than we wanted, so we knew we needed to raise the bar of performance by all managers within the organization.
Our results speak for themselves…across all Pillars! Our finances have improved dramatically, increasing our days cash on hand from 17 to 72, while decreasing our days in AR by 28%
Our patients tell us they’re more pleased than ever as our results are in the 88th percentile for outpatient and 53rd percentile for the Emergency Department and we have consistently been in the 90th percentile for inpatient care.
Our employees tell us HVCH is a better place to work, as evidenced by the dramatic decrease in turnover from 21% to 15% (21% to 8% for nurses, 55% to 3% for STNA’s and 53 to 6% for LPN’s. Our latest employee satisfaction results placed us in the 91st percentile.
We have maintained our market share in a competitive environment, and in the next state wide data base analysis we anticipate seeing an increase in our market share. We know we are hearing more of our patient’s stories and receiving wonderful thank you notes, and the talk in our small community is that there is something different about Hocking Valley Community Hospital.
