Hocking Valley Community Hospital nurses Summer Domino, RN, and Josie Cottrill, RN, were recently honored with The DAISY Award® For Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.
Nominations are submitted from patients or family members through the DAISY Foundation. This year, HVCH had 21 nominations.
Summer’s nomination read:
“Summer came to us as an LPN while she was in nursing school. She quickly learned the different units here at Hocking Valley Community Hospital and has been an advocate for her patients and peers. She is clinically strong as well as empathetic to the needs of others. When Summer completed RN school, she transitioned her role here easily and expanded her ability to provide excellent care to our patients. She has a positive personality that can easily change the day someone is having as she leads the team through the rougher days. Summer is an amazing and compassionate nurse. She is always willing to help and go the extra mile for both, all the patients on the unit (not just her own) and her co-workers. I love working with her. She is excellent at her job! Summer is a great co-worker and nurse. She is always doing a great job of caring for her patients and helping her co-workers.”
Josie’s nomination read:
“Josie is always so helpful to students and always has a positive attitude. She always works hard and is focused. As a student nurse, it can be stressful as we navigate and learn about the hospital, so it’s comforting when you have a person to ask all these questions. She always had a smile on her face and made us feel welcomed. She stands out as a shining example of what it means to be an excellent nurse. She consistently goes above and beyond to support her patients, colleagues, and other nursing students. What sets her apart is her unwavering positivity and patience. No matter how busy or challenging the day became, she remained approachable and kind. Her passion for nursing and her ability to connect with others make her an inspiration to all who work alongside her.”
The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Â Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura, a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.
Said Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, Doctor of Humane Letters and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses at Hocking Valley Community Hospital are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”
“We are pleased to be a part of the DAISY program and recognize nurses at Hocking Valley Community Hospital for their commitment to our patients and community,” Chief Nursing Officer Beth Kluding said.
