Tarek Aziz, M.D.

LOGAN – A new psychiatrist has joined the staff of Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Tarek Aziz, M.D.

Dr. Aziz specializes in psychosomatic medicine, addiction medicine and psychopharmacology. He will see patients in HVCH’s Behavioral Health Unit – The Summit – as well as take appointments at his office at 819 S.R. 664 N., Logan.

“We are excited to have Dr. Aziz join the Hocking Valley Medical Group. We certainly recognize the importance of mental health, and having an additional provider will augment the services we have been able to offer over the years,” Stacey Gabriel, Chief Nursing Officer, said.

Dr. Aziz completed his residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology, the American Board of Psychosomatic Medicine and the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He has medical licenses in both Ohio and Indiana and has served as a faculty member for Wright State University School of Medicine, Ohio State University College of Medicine and Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

“I have worked in every setting – both inpatient and outpatient psychiatry and consulting as well,” Dr. Aziz said. “I enjoy the mix of work at Hocking Valley Community Hospital. I enjoy working with both the inpatient and outpatient areas and with a mix of ages.”

At his office, Dr. Aziz will see patients six years and older, for a variety of disorders including depression, bi-polar disorder, addiction, abuse, schizophrenia, dementia and disorders of childhood and adolescence.

Dr. Aziz will alternate coverage with Dr. Max Haque seeing patients in The Summit every other month.

While working in The Summit, Dr. Aziz will supervise the direct care of patients, seeing them on a daily basis, and treating them with medication as needed. The Summit is a secured unit within the hospital that treats patients age 55 and older with dementia and other psychiatric disorders who require intensive treatment on a short-term basis. Patients are usually referred from another facility and stay on average seven to 10 days.

Patients participate in therapy, music and activity groups. Drs. Aziz and Haque have ongoing communication with patients’ family members about their treatment. Upon discharge, the doctors arrange a continued care plan appointment with the patient’s ongoing healthcare provider.

“We have a unique facility and often receive referrals from Columbus and areas outside of the local area,” Dr. Aziz said.

In his free time, Dr. Aziz enjoys hiking, biking and swimming.

“I wanted a quiet place to serve and wanted to be in a rural area; I really enjoy it here,” he said.

Dr. Aziz’s office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. He is now accepting new patients; you may schedule an appointment by calling (740) 380-8410.
