Mammography

Mammography combines low level x-rays and breast compression to evaluate breast tissues for signs of cancer, micro calcifications and other breast-related diseases. The goal of mammography is the early detection of breast cancer by following the recommendation of a yearly screening exam beginning at the age of 40. Women under 40 who have risk factors for breast cancer should seek advice from their primary care provider.

What should I wear?
You should wear loose comfortable clothing.

What can I expect?
The mammographer will ask you to remove your clothing from the waist up and put on a gown.  You may experience brief discomfort during the compression. The appointment should take about 30 minutes.

How do I prepare for my exam?
Please do not wear any deodorant, powder or lotion.

Can I take prescribed medication?
Yes.  You may take your prescribed medication as normal.

How will I feel after the exam?
A majority of patients are able to resume normal activities immediately after testing. There is a possibility you will experience breast tenderness.
