Dr. Holt retires from Hocking Valley Medical Group

Dr. Holt with retirement cakeAfter being inspired by his own injuries to become an orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Mark Holt is retiring after more than 30 years of work in the field.

Dr. Holt started with Hocking Valley Community Hospital as an orthopedic surgeon with Hocking Valley Medical Group in 2017. He received his doctorate from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his residency at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals Department of Orthopedics in Cleveland. His sports medicine fellowship training was completed at the University of Wisconsin Division of Orthopedic Surgery. Dr. Holt practiced in the Newark and Coshocton areas prior to joining HVCH.

“Helping patients overcome their illnesses and injuries has been the most rewarding part of my career,” Dr. Holt said. “I’m thankful for the relationships formed over the years, and the many chats and stories shared.”

Dr. Holt has seen some changes in orthopedics during his tenure, notably how the use of electronic health records and computer technology have affected the doctor-patient relationship, as well as the role of insurance companies in approvals of procedures.

“It has also been interesting to see how some cases now have robotic assistance,” Dr. Holt said.

Regardless of the changes, Dr. Holt said the qualities of an excellent orthopedic surgeon remain the same: good hand-eye coordination, three-dimensional thinking, problem solving capabilities, and a continued commitment to learning, self evaluation and communication.

“Dr. Holt has been an invaluable part of Hocking Valley Community Hospital and has made a lasting difference in the lives of countless patients throughout his career. His dedication to providing compassionate, high-quality orthopedic care close to home has been deeply appreciated by our patients, staff and community. We are grateful for his many years of service and commitment to HVCH, and we wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement,” Stacey Gabriel, HVCH CEO, said.

In his retirement, Dr. Holt is looking forward to traveling with family, playing pickleball and enjoying fly fishing.
